The Rapid Automotive Performance Simulator (RAPTOR®) is commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) modular simulation software co-developed by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) and DaimlerChrysler for use by automotive, truck, and bus developers and suppliers. Because RAPTOR is capable of configuring, assessing and optimizing system performance of any on-highway vehicle, it allows engineers to model and test virtual vehicle powertrain systems. RAPTOR software is a precision open-architecture platform simulation tool that makes horizontal development of vehicle powertrain systems a distinct possibility. RAPTOR's user-friendly, modular design allows component models and associated data to be added, dropped or modified without the requirement of being an expert MATLAB or Simulink programmer.
RAPTOR has been designed as software with both forward (integration) and backward (derivative) model architectures. Both architectures pull data from a common data set. This enables powertrain engineers, using the faster backward models, to simulate large matrices to map the design space of vehicle performance and fuel economy and then, with the higher fidelity forward models, develop and optimize controls for the best vehicle configuration. The user can also modify the software for HIL, distributed modeling, or co-simulation. Applications include light- (2WD and 4WD), medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles including trailers. RAPTOR is coded entirely in MATLAB and Simulink and can be modified and/or secured at the user's discretion. Combined with the database utilities that are included , RAPTOR ensures consistent interoperability with no loss of model/data integrity or fidelity.
