Senior Application Engineer - Physical Modeling

Job Summary

If you want to become part of a team that is leading the increasing use of math based models of physical systems in the design and development process (“Physical Modeling” in MathWorks speak) then read on.

The immersion of control systems and computing power into physical systems in all walks of life is driving increased complexity in system design, which is difficult for traditional systems design and development processes to address. This increase in system complexity, coupled with the need to bring innovative, high-quality products to market faster is driving the use of models during the design and realization process.

A key requirement of the model-based design process is the ability to accurately represent and simulate the physical systems themselves. The latest model-based design tools significantly lower the barriers in creating models of the physical systems by providing domain specific application libraries (e.g., mechanical, electrical, etc.) thereby allowing controls and software engineers to verify their designs against these models before building a physical prototype. These tools, collectively referred to as the Physical Modeling tools, provide the ability to elegantly and easily model physical systems along with the control algorithm and are a key enabler in addressing the challenges of system complexity, and the need to develop high quality products in a short time frame.

MathWorks core software platforms, MATLAB and Simulink, form the foundation of an integrated model based design environment. The integration of data analysis, algorithm development, modeling and simulation, automatic production code generation, and reporting into a single software environment is becoming essential for companies that develop embedded systems for diverse aerospace, automotive and other applications. The successful Physical Modeling Application Engineer will build on his/her experiences in model based design and modeling real world physical systems to understand and effectively communicate the benefits of the integrated model based design tool chain from MathWorks.

The Application Engineer (AE) will spend most of his/her time focused on supporting customers in building models of real world physical systems using MathWorks’ tools such as Simulink, SimMechanics, SimPowerSystems, SimDriveline (and others to come) in the automotive and other related industries. The primary responsibility of this position is to assist sales personnel in managing the technical aspects of the sales process. The Application Engineer is responsible for applying their knowledge to identify customer needs and to develop solutions and demonstrate product capabilities during sales meetings, conference calls, through the development and delivery of public seminars, and in the development of complex product demonstrations. This position also requires that the Application Engineer is able to work with existing “power users” to answer their questions and assist them in the most efficient and proper use of MathWorks products once deployed.

Responsibilities

1. Providing technical pre-sales support and guidance to MathWorks Japan Sales Organization. Working as a team, the Application Engineer assists the salesperson in identifying, quantifying, and documenting customer requirements, then explaining the features and capabilities of our products relative to the customer's specific needs.

2. Preparing and delivering product presentations to customers and prospects. These are delivered during customer meetings and marketing seminars. These sessions include, but are not limited to live demonstrations of Simulink, SimMechanics, SimPowerSystems, SimDriveline, and related products.

3. Developing demonstration programs, application examples, and simulations. These are generally used to clearly demonstrate how the capabilities of MathWorks software address the concerns of our customers. These demonstrations may be used for sales visits, marketing seminars, or telephone/web customer support.

4. Determine customer requirements and recommend effective solutions. This involves analyzing users’ problems to recommend and demonstrate the best computational approach. Occasionally, customers who are preparing to acquire software require guidance on how to use the physical modeling products in their development process. An Application Engineer with a broad understanding across engineering disciplines is viewed as having exceptional value as MathWorks customers span a broad range of industries, disciplines, and applications. This role also involves working closely with the Marketing and Product Development organizations to drive future product features consistent with customer requirements.

5. Accountability of project quality, timing and effort including the submission of trip or engagement reports as well as weekly activity reports.

Qualifications

This person should possess strong engineering skills in modeling real world physical systems along with an MS or Ph.D. in engineering, or equivalent. Significant experience in model based design, building mathematical models of a variety of physical phenomena, and system level simulation is a plus. Very strong knowledge of (and enthusiasm for!) model based design process and its implications for systems design is essential; experience with a broad set of MathWorks products (including Simulink, SimMechanics, SimPowerSystems, SimDriveline) is another plus.

The candidate should have a demonstrated ability to develop mathematical models, perform computational analysis, and simulation tasks and be able to discuss how our products are changing the systems design process in a fundamental way. A qualified candidate will be able to effectively communicate his/her passion for MathWorks software to our customers. Candidates should be interested in working directly with customers to help them understand how to apply our products to their problems.

Travel is generally throughout Japan specific to various seminars, customer visits, etc. Though far less frequent, some international travel is expected. The candidate should expect to travel about 20-40% of the time with trips generally no longer than two to three days.
