Don Orofino

Don Orofino, MathWorks
Don Orofino is Director of Engineering for Signal Processing, leading product development for the analysis, design, and implementation of signal processing, communications, and computer vision systems. Don holds 18 patents related to engineering system simulation and automatic code generation. Prior to joining MathWorks in 1995, Don worked at Hewlett-Packard Imaging Systems (Andover, MA). Don earned a PhD in ECE at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Kerry Alexander

Kerry Alexander, TriVector Services
Kerry Alexander leads a program initiative at TriVector Services that is making use of discrete-event simulation for end-to-end timing analyses at the packet level using SimEvents®. Kerry developed a timing model based on requirements for the NASA Ares I vehicle and plans to use this technique for future vehicles. Before joining TriVector, Kerry worked for the Boeing Company (formerly McDonnell Douglas Corporation), Teledyne Brown Engineering, and Jacobs Engineering, performing avionics systems engineering, test, and design tasks. Kerry also holds a patent for a programmable power controller with the Boeing Company. Kerry holds a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Florida State University and an M.B.A. degree in operations research from the Florida Institute of Technology.

Richard Cagley

Richard Cagley, Toyon
Richard Cagley is Embedded Systems Group Lead at Toyon Research Corp. While with Toyon, Dr. Cagley has been active in real-time image processing. Novel algorithms for visible to LWIR imagers have been demonstrated in Toyon designed hardware. Dr. Cagley has also led the transition of these algorithms to commercialization. In addition to FPGA hardware, he has development experience with a variety of embedded microcontrollers, including soft and hard FPGA-based processors as well as more traditional MCUs (e.g., ARM7, MSP430, and 8051) as well as high-performance TI DSPs. Recent work has focused on embedded image processing using OpenCL and GPUs. Dr. Cagley has also made significant contributions in Toyon's sensor tasking and tracking work. Prior to joining Toyon Research Corporation, he held positions with Fujant Incorporated, Jet Propulsion Laboratories, and Qualcomm Corporation.

Dr. Cagley received a B.S. degree in engineering from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from University of California, Santa Barbara. His general research interest is in high-performance embedded signal processing. Work in this area has been applied to SDR and image processing. Dr. Cagley is an expert in the rapid transition of advanced signal processing algorithms to FPGA hardware using advanced behavioral design tools. These include several M-synthesis and C-based languages as well as more classical model-based flows. He has published numerous conference and journal papers on physical and MAC layer design for wireless communication. These include multiuser detection, interference cancellation, space-time processing, spectrum management, and digital receiver design. Dr. Cagley has worked on multiuser detectors for DS/CDMA communication systems. Many of these algorithms have been demonstrated on Toyon designed SDRs.

Alpaslan Demir

Alpaslan Demir, InterDigital
Alpaslan Demir is a member of the technical staff at InterDigital Communications, LLC, in Melville, New York. Alpaslan has been with InterDigital since December 1999 supporting the innovation and development of third-generation cellular standards. He is currently leading a team of researchers that are developing state-of-the-art technology in the wireless area. Alpaslan and his team are responsible for the development, simulation, and prototyping of architecture and algorithms with respect to the intelligent and efficient management of wireless spectrum commonly referred to as Dynamic Spectrum Management. Prior to InterDigital, he was an RF engineer at Microwave Power Devices (MPD) in Hauppauge, New York.

Alpaslan received a B.S.E.E. degree from Anadolu University, and then worked as research assistant at Dumlupinar University in Turkey until being awarded with a scholarship to pursue graduate-level studies abroad by the Turkish Ministry of Education. He received an M.S.E.E. degree from Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, New York. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree, part-time, at Polytechnic Institute of NYU at the Long Island Graduate Center. Alpaslan holds 39 U.S. patents, with additional patent applications pending.

David A. Haessig

David A. Haessig, Jr., BAE Systems
Dr. David Haessig is the manager of Waveform Products at BAE Systems (Wayne, New Jersey), a group engaged in the development of wireless communication, control, and avionic systems for military applications. He recently led BAE’s development of the Wideband Networking Waveform (WNW) and served as the Comms-IPT lead on the DARPA Novel Satellite Communication program. He holds degrees in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University and in electrical engineering from NJIT. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and an adjunct professor at NJIT. He holds four patents in the area of inertial stabilization and has over 23 professional publications.

Henrik Jensen

Henrik Jensen, Broadcom
Henrik Jensen is associate technical director working on wireless system design at Broadcom Corporation. In 2010 he was elected Broadcom Distinguished Engineer. In 2000, he joined Innovent Systems, Inc., which was later acquired by Broadcom, working on Bluetooth wireless system design. He has authored or co-authored several journal and conference papers and holds more than 50 U.S. patents. He has a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, San Diego, (UCSD) and also spent a year as a postdoctorate researcher at UCSD.

Sean Lynch

Sean Lynch, Nujira
Sean Lynch manages the development of Nujira’s RF development platform, which is used both internally and externally by customers to develop, evaluate, and integrate envelope tracking products. He has more than 20 years of telecommunications experience, having worked with most of the leading telecommunications companies. In particular he managed the integration of TTPCom’s application suite with Intel’s first 3G chipset for a phone being designed by ASUSTek. Sean also successfully built the embedded software development group at Radiant Networks, which proved mesh wireless technology to British Telecommunications. While at Cambridge Consultants, he led the “fastest” Synchronous Digital Hierarchy node manager development for Nokia, and later managed their DECT Development Program. Sean holds a first class honours degree in electrical and electronic engineering.

Russell Mohn

Russell Mohn, Epoch Microelectronics
Russell Mohn is a senior design engineer at Epoch Microelectronics, an IC design services company specializing in mixed-signal, analog, and RF design. At Epoch, his focus has been on the design of fractional-N frequency synthesizers for communications applications. He has a B.E. in EE from Cooper Union. His interests include FPGA prototyping, system modeling, and signal processing.

Arvind Ananthan

Arvind Ananthan, MathWorks
Arvind Ananthan is product marketing manager for MATLAB Coder and Fixed-Point Toolbox at MathWorks. Since joining MathWorks in 2001, he has held various technical selling and marketing positions, including his previous role as a senior applications engineer for signal and video processing and communications products. He has worked closely with numerous MathWorks customers to help them understand the value of the tools in their design workflow and successfully apply them in real-world applications. He has a B.E. in electronics and communications from University of Madras and an M.S. in electrical engineering from University of Maryland.

Jason Bryan

Jason Bryan, MathWorks
Jason Bryan joined MathWorks in 2004 and primarily supports engineers in the defense industry working on communications applications. He has B.S. and M.S. degrees from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, both in electrical engineering. He specialized in digital signal processing for communications systems and did his thesis work in the area of fault-tolerant digital systems.

Mike Donovan

Mike Donovan, MathWorks
Before joining MathWorks in 2004, Mike Donovan worked on radar and satellite communications systems for Westinghouse and at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center; in the broadband telecommunications industry for GTE Government Systems, GTE Laboratories; and as a contractor for Motorola. Mike has a B.S. from Bucknell University and an M.S. from University of Connecticut, both in electrical engineering.

Cyril Iskander

Cyril Iskander, Signal Processing Consultant
Cyril Iskander is a consultant in communications systems design, implementation, and deployment. His expertise spans all layers of communications systems, from RF techniques to application protocols. As a senior solutions architect at Vantrix Corporation, he was responsible for the integration of mobile video streaming and optimization solutions in customers' networks. As a signal processing architect at Averna Technologies, he led the development of real-time satellite radio generators, implemented on the Universal Receiver Tester platform. Cyril was also a senior developer for MathWorks communications simulation products and a professor of electrical engineering at Florida Atlantic University, lecturing on digital signal processing and communications systems. Cyril holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of British Columbia. He is a senior member of the IEEE, and has published over 50 papers in international publications and conferences.
