Respect and Invest

We believe in respect for the individual and care about investing in each others' growth, both for people at MathWorks and for those in our extended community:

  • Do unto others as you would have others do unto you (the Golden Rule)
    • Treat each other with fairness, respect, and honesty
    • Help, support, and include others
    • Empathize to understand others' views
    • Trust and have faith in others
    • Focus on the situation or behavior, not the person

  • Coach, develop, and train the people you work with
    • Value and bring out the potential of people
    • Challenge people to do their best
    • Keep everybody learning
    • Leave everyone you interact with a little bit better
    • Provide opportunities for personal growth
    • Celebrate successes

Processes and Programs that Support Respect and Invest

Training

Training reinvests some of our hard-earned profits back into ourselves. This program not only teaches specific skills; it also expands our horizons, provides new perspectives, and brings new ideas into the organization. This benefits both you and MathWorks by helping with your career growth and increasing the value that you bring to your business area and the entire company.

We encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity by taking at least 40 hours of training per year. The types of training that can make up the 40 hours include:

  • In-house seminars
  • Offsite, public seminars
  • Industry conferences
  • Formal continuing education programs
  • Business-related books and tapes

Training not only enables you to learn specific skills; it also expands our horizons, provides new perspectives, and brings new ideas into the organization. We encourage each staff member to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their own career while benefiting MathWorks.

Big Picture Orientation

Big Picture Orientation (BPO) was designed to equip new staff members with the tools and information they need to become as effective as possible, as quickly as possible. This interactive program, facilitated by a member of senior management, exposes new staff to the entire organization, or "Big Picture." Staff members take away a clear idea of how the company operates and a better understanding of its values, culture, and history. Over the course of four half days, participants receive:

  • An introduction to MathWorks, given by Jack Little
  • Training in our products, markets, competition, and business model
  • Hands-on experience of every business area in the company

Every new staff member takes part in BPO within two months of starting work.
